Denver Nuggets: Basketball Camp Provides Safe Environment

Fort Carson, col. - After six months of hard work and dedication, the Fort Carson Timberline Child Youth Services facility is now open following a ribbon cutting ceremony on April 1, 2022.

The facility, located at 1352 Ellis Street, Building 5939, will house a central parent office, youth sports and fitness, family childcare, full-time childcare, and school support. While the renovation took less than a year, it has taken more than a decade to get to this point.

"It certainly took decades to get to this point," said Mike O'Donnell, director of the Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation. "Now we have this complete facility that's able to include youth sports, child welfare programs and basically be able to showcase every single program we have here at Fort Carson."

The reopening of the renovated facility allowed soldiers and family members to meet with youth sports representatives, child welfare centers and school liaison officers.

"My husband recently started working, so we have a chance to give our kids a good education and good opportunities," Hastings said. "It helps that we don't have to worry about who can watch our kids."

This facility is a one-stop shop for parents looking for information about youth sports, child care, or local school districts.

Fort Carson Suspends Trusted Traveler Program

"To participate in any activity, you have to go through Parent Central Services," said Armanda Hunt, Child Youth Services Coordinator for Fort Carson. “We have two programs that fall under the umbrella of CYS: Family Child Care, which is provided in the homes of installation spouses and our youth sports program housed in the facility as well as school liaison officers who Support local school districts with high military student populations and our nursing component.

Having representatives from these groups at the facility makes it easier to support families and provide them with the services they need, Hunt said. The day provided an opportunity to showcase what CYS has to offer under one roof.

"We need to let our families know we're here for them," said school liaison officer DeEnzo Williams. "Now is the time (post-Covid) to welcome them back."

Fort Carson teens have the option of playing video games at home after school or hanging out with friends in the neighborhood. The Youth Service Center offers activities, clubs and classes on a variety of topics, including photography, cooking, astronomy, sports and games.

"We focus on four key service areas, which are sports, fitness and health; life skills, citizenship and leadership; arts, recreation and leisure; (e) educational support, guidance and intervention," Youth "We try to offer programs in all these different areas," said Ben Holman, the center's director.

Main Child Development Center

After school, middle and high school teens can visit the center for a snack and activity. There is an outdoor entertainment area with pool table, table tennis and table football.

"They get points for completing homework ... and then every month we have a Power Hour shop where they can take points and they can spend it on items," Holman said. "(It's) a reward for completing homework."

"They can get involved in a project, or if they just want to come and do something themselves, they're welcome to do that," he said.

Opportunities exist through the Youth Advisory Council, Keystone Club, a high school leadership club, and Torch Club, a middle school leadership club.

Army Cys Services

"There's a lot of things for kids, and we always love to have kids come and give us their ideas," Holman said. "If it's something we can accomplish, we'll try."

The Youth Service Center is open to military teens, grades 6 through 12, after school until 7:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and until 9:00 p.m. Friday. It is also open from 1pm to 9pm. Saturday. On school holidays, the center opens at 1pm. For outdoor recreation.

Students must register, but there is no cost, and paperwork can be completed at the Youth Services Center, provided there are no allergies, special dietary needs or emergency medications. Otherwise, forms must be archived through Parent Central.

To get to and from downtown, teens can take a shuttle that leaves from Carson Middle School right after school. During the center's opening hours the shuttle runs every half hour to the post office through residential areas. The last shuttle leaves the Youth Center at 7:00pm Monday to Thursday and 8:15pm on Friday.

"We try to let the kids be the adults they're going to be. (We) try to guide them," Holman said.
