So far, Russian military operations have been hampered by formidable ground resistance and a staggering inability to control airspace. Meanwhile, many Ukrainian citizens spent another night in shelters in basements or corridors.

On Monday, fighting did not stop after the first five hours of talks between Ukraine and Russia, with both sides agreeing to meet again in the coming days. As talks on the Belarusian border ended, more explosions could be heard in Kiev and Russian troops entered the city of about 3 million people.
Elsewhere, Kharkiv, Ukraine's second-largest city of about 1.5 million people, was shown on video bombarding residential areas, with apartment buildings rocked by repeated explosions.
Officials in the mining town of Kharif said several people were killed and dozens injured. He warned that the death toll and the number of injured could be higher.
Fighting also broke out in other towns and villages. Oleksiy Arestovich, an adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, said the strategic port city of Mariupol on the Sea of Azov was "hanging". An explosion occurred at an oil depot in the eastern city of Sumi.

Ukraine: Russia Shelled Mariupol Humanitarian Corridor, Break Cease Fire
Engineers at Picatinny Arsenal are looking to expand the range of potential artillery pieces with new manufacturing methods that improve artillery shells, allowing them to withstand higher projectile speeds and temperatures.
In artillery shells, the driving band or spinning band is a soft metal band at the bottom of the shell, often made of copper or lead-coated steel. When the shell is sprayed, the pressure of the machine pushes the metal into the tank baffle and creates a seal. It seals preventing gas from flowing through the casing and inserts a barrel gun to rotate and stabilize the casing.
Current copper coils for artillery are designed for the 39 caliber rifle system. Historically, copper has been used as a rotating group material due to its properties and ability to survive shooting with minimal damage to the barrel.
However, when these copper spinning bands are used for the 50+ caliber system expansion range, they cannot withstand high speeds and temperatures. Solutions include new materials and new manufacturing methods that are no longer available on an industrial basis.

"We learned a lot in the Crusader era about why we needed this project," said Joseph Paras, materials engineer, referring to the software for the self-contained sprayers.
"We've learned that for mass or greater range, the materials we're using are not going to be viable. That's really the driving force for advanced manufacturing," said Paras, who is at the Combat Capability Development Command Armament Center, part of the Futures Command.
The objective of this project is to evaluate various manufacturing technologies to achieve the rotational band performance required for the extended range required for ammunition processing.
"We have some good guesses on the manufacturing technology that will work," he said. We just need to model and analyze to verify,” said Paras.

Different metallurgical methods and technologies will be evaluated to determine the best. Study methods include:
Synchronize the welding of the two arcs, which will reduce the current required and thus the amount of molten metal in the tower.
Non-conventional welding, including laser welding, will control the characteristics of the melt pool better than arc welding.
Emerging technologies including cold spraying will join raw materials that would normally not be matched without melting and create unique material properties.

Integration of manufacturing processes will also be studied. For example, standard rotary welding is followed by cold spraying to place the second material next to or on top of the first material. All production processes will be evaluated for performance and cost in preparation for low-cost initial production.
The new repair technique, known as high-pressure cold spraying, could be a great engineering asset when applied to metal placement for rotating groups, Paras said. The cold spraying process has become one of the military solutions for corrosion damage and dimensional restoration.
According to the US research laboratory, "Researchers use high-pressure gas to accelerate metal particles faster than sound can hit the surface of a target." After impact, the particles will deform and become smooth by adhering to the substrate. A high-pressure sprayer can apply a layer of material to vehicle parts to fill holes and coating surfaces.
"Because cold spraying does not require heat to bond the material, the maintenance unit can repair heat-sensitive components that would normally melt or melt with conventional methods such as heat spraying or welding."
Military Briefing: Is The West Running Out Of Ammunition To Supply Ukraine?
Cold spraying may be a viable approach, but engineers will evaluate several options to determine the best solution.
"It would be most beneficial for us if we could use new materials using existing processes," Paras said.
Engineers hope to achieve several goals, including manufacturing solutions for rotary groups used in a range of range bombs, including the XM1128 and XM1155, development of adaptive manufacturing processes for other 155mm and 105mm systems, and provision of technical data packages. For all weapon solutions.
"The project will be linked to XM1113," Paras said. "That's a goal, but in terms of adaptability to other systems, anything we learn here can be applied to other 155mm or 105mm systems."

The proposed timeline for the project is from fiscal year 2021 to 2024, Paras said. There are plans to switch the ground combat system to the Office operating system.
